Minolta XG7 meter issue

I have two of these and the meter in the viewfinder is not showimg me anything. The batteries are good and they both advance and fire. I just think I might be doing something wrong since this is happening with both cameras.

Are you in manual mode? According to this site the meter turns off when you put the camera in manual mode.
