Monitor Calibration?

Okay, so I need to calibrate 2 laptops and an LCD... Does anyone recommend a good, free or inexpensive, calibration software? THX!

Also, I don't know a thing about calibrating monitors - can some explain how this is done? In layman's, or "Calibration for Dummies" terms.
