Monitor too dark or light?

This may be a dumb question, but I work off of a desktop and a laptop. When I make pics look good on the desktop, they seem much too light on the laptop, and vice versa.

How do I know which is the correct one? Is there some kind of standardized setting that can be used to ensure I always get the right monitor settings?

You need to calibrate your monitors with hardware. I'd recommend the Spyder series of calibrators; preferably one that records ambient light.
