Back in the mid 80s, I did a lot of work with adventurers on a wide range of projects from fairly mundane (kind of like yours) with small budgets to life risking-record breaking trips with humongous budgets. Some of what I did, besides photos and movies of the projects I was participating in, was find the financing. Although I can see you raising funds through the social networks, I think it would be faster doing it the old way: approaching companies for sponsorship.

Wow, thanks for discounting my aspirations. Very kind. What difference does it make that they did something completely different and "better" than my project? That doesn't make mine any less important to me, or important in general. If you didn't like the idea, you could have said that. There was no reason to try to degrade it like that. You should have shown me the book for inspiration, not to show me that my project was mediocre in comparison.

As for paying for my "holiday in paradise," no. I'm hoping to get funding to help me on a project. Crowdfunding campaigns can be very successful with enough interest and word of mouth. It's the same thing as a fundraiser, if you think about it. It's not like a charity benefit. But no one complains about asking for funding that way. Where would any small businesses be without investors? Where would any sports player be without sponsors? It's wonderful that they did that, but that's simply not an option for me. Some people don't have that much disposable money. That doesn't mean they don't have the same big dreams like everyone else used to. Please don't try to make it seem that way.

I am trying that as well. I'm trying to exhaust every outlet I can to make this become reality. I've just started hearing about crowdfunding, and, I've found that the projects can be quite successful with enough word of mouth. Not only that, the more people that know about the project, the more people will see the final product. So, it's a win-win. But, as for funding, I'm certainly going the sponsor route as well.

To be honest, if gsgary had not answered first, I may have told you something very similar to his response. From a different perspective, true, but it would have been close. And not meant to discount/destroy your dreams but to make you think about what is out there.

Back when I dealt with this kind of stuff, it was still fairly easy to amaze people with simple projects but it was the dangerous ones that attracted the most money. And unknown people had to prove themselves before they could get much money, ie the money came after the trip in the form of articles sold to the printed media, movies sold to the TV media, possible books (very few that I'm aware of for some reason I'm not going to get into here) and, back then, slide shows.

Slide shows is how I first got involved. I was doing them for the military when my sister went on a trip. When she got back I did hers and we started showing it all over Europe. Things started rolling from that point on and since those people fascinated me, I went along.

Today, I guess you'd do a video show. Of some sort.

Anyway, all that to say that gsgary's response and my "mundane project" comment are very close to each other. Remember we had the movie about the guy who cut off his own arm to survive this year (or was it last year?) so that your PR needs to be top notch if you want to get anywhere.

Last but not least: don't disappoint the people who do send you money! If you do, you'll have a hell of a time getting more money the next time around.
