Because the processing is reminiscent of all the birding books where the images are done by hand.

that doesn't make it an illustration, it makes it a photo destroyed by PS filters.

I dont understand how it is a destroyed photo. So what if he did it in photoshop, it still represents an illustration. Personally, I think it's pretty awesome and wouldnt mind learning how to do it my self. I know several things I can use this for. Especially since im not artistic enough to hand draw it.
