Question ... does it appear to anyone that the focus is a little behind the head on the last pic?

Yes, the framing in #1 is fantastic!
Can't really tell about the focus question. The foliage directly behind the bird looks pretty sharp, but then again so does the foliage directly in front of the bird...

I think number 2 really nails "Blue Steel" _ Sorry Zoolander reference just couldn't be helped :biglaugh:

Very cool framing in #1; #2 says, "It's a REALLY bad day to be a small fish!"

Thanks, guys! @zulu42 I'm looking at the pin feathers sticking up to the right of the center of it's back and comparing them to the pin feathers sticking up on it's head. It seems to me the feathers on it's back are more in focus but the focus should be on it's face.

One thing I noticed on my 150-600 is that it seems to creep in and out of back focusing. Seems I need to re-check and compensate for back focusing periodically. If it becomes consistent you might want to do some testing.

Love the framing in the first one. What is the circular black thing? The dark background circle shows off the breast feathers.

Very nice set......

Thank you. @CherylL That black thing is the opening to a drainage pipe. the water comes halfway up inside of it so it's reflection makes it look like a circle. When I first noticed it with an anhinga sitting in the same spot I had an "Oh, yes!" moment.

Yes, thank you, I noticed the same thing and I also noticed that it seems to focus better in "ONE SHOT" than in "AI SERVO." (on still subjects) One thing I have tried that seems to help (when I remember to do it, ha!) is I will constantly re-focus every few pics of the same thing in case it is back focusing. Doing that seems to deliver at least one in focus pic. Do you have the G2? I don't.

Do you have the G2

Mine is the G2. In this type of shooting there is so many things that can affect sharpness. Another thing that gets me is that the little square in the viewfinder that is supposed to be the focus point-isn't. I learned doing more precision focusing like macro that the actual focus point is slightly higher and to the left of the indicator square. So if I'm at 600mm hand holding and trying to get that point on the eye of a sparrow... lots of room for error.

Often I'll get shots that aren't sharp and I can never figure out the problem.

I'm about to go out right now so I'll check and see if mine is high and to the left also. I'm wondering now if that's a mass defect with all their 150-600 mm lenses or just one that exists within a small batch or other.
