My baby cousin

How are these shots? I did them for my cousin. I know the first is a little OOF, but how are these on composition and lighting? The last one was done with flash. Thanks

He is an adorable little boy. I'm sure he is great fun and a real bundle of energy.


#1: This seems a little dark to me. I did a quick edit... I slightly increased the brightness, contrast, and saturation. I also sharpened it.

#2: I am really distracted by the very bright french doors behind them. I wish there was less "empty space" at the top and a tiny bit more room at the bottom -- The tips of mom's toes were chopped off.

#3: Between the busy background, no eye contact, and uninteresting lighting, this one just doesn't do it for me.

BUT-- I am just a total stanger with no emotional attachment at all. I bet the boy's mom loves them

I did have a crop in mind for number 2. I'm just thinking of how I want to do it. I've actually got a few more pics of him with the cell phone, and one of him holding it to his ear. He actually somehow called my phone and left a voice-mail.

What kind of flash are you using? You might be able to bounce the flash off the ceiling to eliminate the little bit of shadow in the background.....of course with little kids you don't exactly have time to set everything up that nicely.

Unfortunately I've only got the built-in flash.

These are underexposed. The camera is being fooled by the brightness of the background. You need .5 or 1 stop positive exposure compensation.

Thanks for the feedback all! I've learned from these first few shots. They are the first time I've taken pictures of people. I usually take pictures of still life or wildlife. I'm hoping to learn because my aunt wants pictures of her grand daughter this summer. I've got some ideas, but my technical side needs practice.
