My camera and PS are much smarter than I am

I was sitting in Red Emma's Coffeehouse in Baltimore and thought I'd see just how much my camera and PS could compensate for my relative ineptness so I snapped 6 pictures in rough pano orientation, keeping the aperture the same and allowing the camera to do what it would without my input. Then I loaded those images, without any further tinkering, into PS and let it merge them.

The result was disgustingly good, imo.

Red Emma's is an anarcho-socialist bookstore that has lately moved from a spot much nearer downtown near the Peabody Institute (music) into an area that is fast becoming an artsy hangout and is near MICA (art).
It is a bit incongruous that anarchists and socialists have joined in a business venture, not to mention their prices are high, although their coffee is good. Even more incongruous was that they closed early on Sunday for a business meeting. Their chocolate chip cookies look a bit non-traditional but taste excellent.

Software is VERY good at finding similar patterns of data. The rectilinear distortion pattern is unappealing, but yeah, the software churned out a pano, as it was designed to do. We are blessed with amazingly sophisticated software these days, run on powerful computers which 15 years ago, would ALL have been classed as "supercomputers" which would not have been allowed to be sold to unfriendly foreign regimes, like North Korea, for example.

The iPhone 5 can make panos on whirls snapped with the camera held in one hand; the newly-announced Nikon D3300 now has a built-in multi-shot panorama assembly mode. Panoramic aligning and merging is one of the big new things. It has become something that can now be done with no human intervention needed.

My guess is that it was 5 megabytes not gigabytes.

Thats funny. Those of us who are recent enough to this think a 11mp camera that can only shoot to iso 1250 is crap now because things have come so much further. This Terminator thing might not be so "sci fi" after all
