My dogs..what is wrong with this photo?

The shadows??
I can't figure it out..

The shot is out of focus, hard shadows on the ground of the way the sun hits them. Whites are blown out.

Looks soft to me. In addition to the above comment, I'd also say there is too much empty space to the sides and an eye-level shot would be better.

Bright sunny days aren't that great for taking pictures. You be better off getting them in the shade. You could use a flash if you needed it.

Ok, now that it's been established what is wrong with the photos.

How can the photographer correct it for next time? I'm a total newb to digital photography and photography in general. So I'm wondering how it can be fixed?

I agree with the level shot, and maybe having the dogs in the shade with a flash. But that's not always possible with animals, is it?
