Hello everyone, I'm Daniel.

I've been looking around for a second hand DSLR for a little while now, as I'd like to start getting into photography. I've heard great things about the Nikon D40 and would like to buy one.

I found this ebay auction and was wondering if this looks okay to buy? What else would I need to buy with it? What sort of lense? Flash? Etc.

Nikon D40 digital SLR camera with 18-55mm lens (eBay item 160524131936 end time 07-Jan-11 15:09:18 AEDST) : Cameras

It costs $400 AU to buy upfront. From the research I've done, that seems like a good price.

I'm a complete newbie and would appreciate any help.

Cheers everyone, Dan.

I have a D40 personally but I recommend finding a used D70S with a low shutter count. The D70S has a internal autofocus motor that allows it to work with any Nikon lenses. The D40 doesn't have the internal focus motor and only works with newer style lenses. You should be able to find a good used D70S for around $250ish if you are patient or $300ish if you are in a hurry.

Thanks Ken. But I'm pretty set on buying a D40. Thanks for the input none-the-les. ;)

Anyone have any info regarding my first post?

Have you compaired the D40 and the D70S bodies and specs. Just a quick look at the 2 and teh D70 seems to be a much better camera. Also the cost savings on adding glass to it you will be thanking yourself in the future. Look at the price of class with the built in AF motor. I know with my canon it was a $100 diffrence easily. But if your dead set on the D40 go for it and enjoy

I wouldnt pick up a D40 due to the internal focus motor issue mentionned earlier.

Even getting a used Canon XTI or XSI. I checked local craigslist and one guy has an XSI with 18-55 lens for $485
Another guy has a Canon XS + grip + extra battery for $300. Get a 50 1.8 for $90 and you are set.
Another guy has a Canon XTI + 18-55 for $350

It seems the AF lenses that don't have a focus motor in them, usually cost a lot more than the consumer AF-S lenses that do have a motor in them.

How about posting some examples Zrock?
