...is tomorrow and im sooo excited! I have a speedlight and an alien bee. I think my alien bee and my reflector should be enough. Question though.. should I use the flash on my AB, or should I just use the modeling lamp light on it? I never used the modeling lamp before. I'm just worried about the flash and the baby, and I want the lighting to look as natural as possible.

flash, modeling light isn't enough.....low power+softbox....baby's skin blows out easily..

Thanks! So I should stay around 1/32 or 1/16 for my lighting? I have a shoot through white umbrella that I use on my AB.. do you think that would be ok? Do you think one light + one reflector would be enough for a newborn shoot?

yup, keep the power low, baby's skin is so soft that it blows out very easy. one light and reflector is fine, I've shot bouncing my light off walls and ceilings because even at low power shooting through a softbox it became overpowering. you will just have to shoot some test shots and find out what's working.

If your doing the shoot during the daytime, you could try doing some shots close to a window, and try natural lighting. You may need to bump up your ISO, but natural lighting may work wonders.

Definitely flash, the modeling light is to tell you where the flash is going to go, not for the actual shot.

The flash won't hurt the baby and the natural light look comes from using big light modifiers as close as possible to your subject.

I agree. I have shot newborns in a studio and location just using natural light and I have to say the natural light has the preference.

I have a 5 in one reflector that includes a big shoot through diffuser. Do you think it is good to put in front of the baby and the AB with the umbrella attached? Or should i just use the diffuser alone and shoot the AB through it?
