Not really understading your post. You say this is what you like, if thats true then stick to it. I dont care for the look, it doesnt look like anything was done, it looks more like it was a camera malfunction.

As for pointing you in the right direction, how about just taking a series of pics, making a post with no more than 3 pics. Practice exposing the scene properly( not to bright, not to dark). Work on your composition, maybe look at someones photo and try to copy it. Theres also several books that are a good read, Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson and Scott Kelbys The Photography Book 1&2...
