I remember reading recently an article of a 250kg 1700mm f/4 Zeiss lens for Hassleblad.

So no, that isnt the biggest lens in existence. Its only 220 pounds, ~100kg.

Well for only having just recently taken a interest in photography a few months ago im not up to what was discussed on this forum 2 years ago and i though it was interesting. Maybe some of the members who were not around 2 years ago might find it interesting also.

I believe the Hubble Space Telescope is the winner for the biggest.

The Hubble isn't very big at all, having a 7.9 foot mirror.

The Hubble's big advantage is it's above Earth's atmosphere.

The 7.9 foot primary mirror was made by Perkins-Elmer and was shaped wrong such that it had sever spherical aberration.
A testing device (null corrector) used during mirror figuring to assure a properly shaped non-spherical mirror, had been incorrectly assembled.
Unfortunately, the error in the primary mirror would not be detected until Hubble was on orbit.

If I'm not mistaken, the initial problems with the mirror on Hubble was a failure to convert Metric measurements from the European team to Imperial measurements from the US team. That's why I'm still pissed off with the US promise to go metric back in the 60's. How difficult is base 10?

That issue was between NASA and Lockheed. The conversion of newton-seconds to pound-seconds was the f-up, and cause a very expensive Mars probe to dip into the atmosphere of Mars and burn up.
