My nifty fifty is always my go-to

As stated my 50 is always my go to, it is always mounted and used frankly 99% of the time. With limited outdoor activities (bc of my 11 week old) and limited daylight I feel I am justified in not using my 70-200 right now since I am mainly shooting indoors at dusk/night and it only stops down to f/4. My 18-135 could probably see more use, I guess my question is- is this normal for 50 owners and/or this time of year? We are heading to see family in a bit and I plan to play around with my 18-135 while it is light outside and as it darkens switch to my 50.

I own a 50 however, for me I used a 18-250 3.5-5.6 sigma with my sb700(domed due to vaulted wood ceilings). I did that because I couldn't jump around 12 adults and 2 children in a small living room. In addition it helped me to control what was in the fov for the photo.
Just how I did it this time though. It may not be the "best way", but I was experimenting. I should add I like how many of my photos came out.

Not for me. I've never even owned a 1.8 lens nor felt like I've needed one. That depth of field is generally too narrow for anything I tend to shoot, a 50mm is a little wide for indoor use in my opinion, and a flash gives me better light.

I like my 50's (Canon 1.8 and a Zeiss/Contax 50/1.4), and one or the other is usually on the bodies I have. However, they are narrow for indoors, especially for groups. I use a 24-105 for those occasions. I like the simplicity of the 50, plus the IQ on pretty much any standard 50mm is excellent.

I own a 50mm1.4, 24-70mm and the 70-200mm. I find indoors I'm always reaching for my 24-70mm, today taking pics of my nieces I was using both lenses just to see which images I liked better I honestly liked my 24-70 images better than the ones taken with my 50. I don't use my 50 much figured today would be a good day to give it more of a run but I found myself reaching for the 24-70 again. I had to cameras going as I hate switching out lenses lol.

My 50 f/1.4 was on my camera almost constantly over the holidays. Indoors is much too dark to shoot at f/4 (or even f/2.8) without a flash, especially at night. I'd really like to pick up a 24L or a 35L in the near future.

I really need to learn more about using flash, I just can't seem to get good results, always seem to light everything up too much, even when adjusting the flash compensation. Granted I could also use a SpeedLite or something so I can ditch the OCF.

I'll definitely give my 18-135 a run today! I completely agree with the 50 having a narrow DOF, most of my indoor pictures so far have been portraits of my daughter and wife, so it's worked pretty well, especially at low light. I just got into photography this winter so unfortunately it's always dark by the time I get home in the evenings.

I was able to be pretty centrally-located at my parents and in-laws for Christmas so I was able to get some decent shots, today at my uncle's it will be a different story so I think the 18-135 will come in handy!

Hmm, I've got my fifty and despite LOVING the overall quality and the narrow DOF I still tend to stick to my kit lens since I'm normally just walking around taking casual shots... If It's a shot that I really like and that I know would be taken better with my 50 I'll simply take a picture and come back, or switch lenses if I have it on me.

But yeah. It's kind of an addicting lens at first. The quality is hard to find anywhere else for that price.

Try diffusing it off the ceiling. It works great for spreading out the light.

pretty much have my 35 f/1.8 or 60 f/2 on most of the time. Usually have the flash set to commander mode and either hold it where I want it or use the mini stand or a justin clamp.
