So instead of making a million threads like I have been. I'm going to use this single thread and update it with questions as I need to ask.

My first noob question.

I'm going to be shooting outside today when the sun starts to set. Also a little before. I'm running 800 Superia Fuji in it. What is the best exposure setting for this type of event?

There will be lots of people and Mid range lighting.

Whatever your light meter tells you is a good exposure is what I would use.

There's no possible way anyone on the forum can know exactly what your lighting conditions are going to be, or what lens you're using, what you intend on shooting. There are too many variables.

Lots of times people post questions asking "What kind of setting do I use for X situation?"

You use whatever settings will expose the scene properly.

This is exactly what rear curtain flash is for. Otherwise you get silhouettes.

1) You use the meter to determine the camera settings as if flash was not being used. This will correctly expose for an awesome sunset. (actually under expose a hair from what the meter says is best for realistic capture like you see it)

2) Then use a rear curtain flash at the end of step one exposure gets all the people properly exposed.

Perfect every time. Just tell every one to stand semi still for a few seconds while step one does its thing. You can do a test shot all by your self to determine step one duration and then announce and do a count down out loud for that many seconds so they know when the flash will fire.

here is the same concept from a fill flash perspective.
