Top cat: One monolight with a beauty ring, roughly 90° to the camera, another about 45° on the same side, shot into a silver reflector. I had to use the reflector just to get some light into her eyes.

Lower cat: One monolight with a beauty ring, roughly 90° to the camera.

No wait..... I really want to know how you got the cats to pose like that.

I had the cats euthanized and took 'em to the taxidermist.

Seriously: I cheated. I knew full well there was NO WAY they were going to pose like they did TOGETHER. So I took individual shots and merged 'em in post.

The original shots:

I just darkened the black cloth to pure black, and selectively darkened the body of the cats.

Both of 'em were only about 6" off the floor, and I just stood where I wanted them to look and held out one of their toys so I could get their attention.

Merge 'em in post, and fill the BG with black.
