What's new

My Web Site - What could I improve on it... suggestions please

Thanks for the help, when I get some time I will look into another website the allows HTML

I'd say that you wasted time making a flash site on Wix. And I couldn't figure out where to turn the music off fast enough, so I stayed on your page for like 7 seconds tops.

If you take the music away, your average bounce rate time would probably rise.

Agreed. The music needs to go.

The images are very small, perhaps work on getting images to show at a higher resolution. But it also needs to be just as quick as it is now, or people will leave.

A final thought would be that you're taking the shotgun approach to photography and obtaining clients., Meaning, you've got a whole list of what type of work you can do, Landscape, weddings,.

Here's the list of your available servies copied from your site:

- Fashion Photography
- Portrait Photography
- Sports Photography
- Event Photography
- Landscape Photography
- Real Estate Photography
- Maternity Photography
- Newborn Photography
- Family Photography
- Promotional Photography
-Timeline Pregnancy Photography

You need to narrow your specialties down imo, or you will be lost in the noise of all the other photographers out there. Namely, the ones that actually specialize in these fields.

Consider this, to be truly an expert at something you need to spend 10,000 hours doing it. that means, from this list of 11 specialties, you need to spend 110,000 hours total time put in to master each aspect.

The math breaks down like this... 110,000total hrs /24 hr day = 4,583 days / 365 days in a year = 12.55 years @ 24 hrs a days. Lets say you worked relentlessly for 365 days a year, 10 hours a day, that's going to put you at close to 30 years to truly be a master in all these categories. Your website, it says you are a part-time photographer. So the math isn't adding up here.

I don't want to convolute my message here, just trying to illustrate a point. People will gravitate to you if you're truly an expert in one or two fields.

What do you want to do? What type of photographer do you want to be? Just like anything else in life, people want to hire someone who is truly professional at one or two aspects of something, not just mediocre at everything. People are drawn to experts.

Thanks for your help, the truth is I really don't know what photography i want to specialise in... I love working alone and the beauty of our world so i am drawn the landscape, but i also love capturing pure emotion so i am drawn to portraits and couple photography. I have horses and compete in horse sports and shows so enjoy photographing that, though I don't think i would specialise in that field... I guess it is going to take a little while to find my neiche and settle into that.

As far as the web site goes... well I don't really know how to create one without using a template type site, I think I may go do a short course at our local TAFE.

Thanks again for your help, maybe once I find my safe zone I will change my services offered section..

Regards
Melissa

have deleted some from my services list and also deleted the music

This is a good starting point. I would say a great combo for you would be a 5d Mk II/ 7d. You could use the Mark II for portrait/landscapes and the 7d for sports.

i'm no help there. Haven't crossed that bridge yet.

Absolutely. I think that ptting it bluntly is the best way to get things done. No need to mince words! You can always make your client aware of what you do after the fact. Give them a list of all the types of photography you can do.

But build a strong portfolio in a couple areas that you know you're awesome, market yourself in these areas, and it should pay dividends to you in the long run.

I have a 7D as for the Mark II - a wee bit out of my price range at this stage

You'll definitely benefit from one if you do a lot of weddings and landscapes.

But yes, it is cost prohibitive to most. It is a pro camera .

Try and learn Dreamweaver before, if you manage Photoshop you'll be able to use this software ;) There're lots of lessons in YouTube, and the main advantage in Dreamweaver is that you can design a website without knowing code, writing no line in HTML at all. It is like making a wedding invitation with Photoshop -well, not exactly, but if you have ever made any graphic design with PS, that's the mood.

I actually love the simplicity and the beauty of your website, but still agree that flash is not always the thing. You can be using embedding images (or albums) into classic HTML using software like "Visual Lightbox" for example, which can very nice effects and even make your website faster. Other thing if you wanna get deep into web development, you may wanna try using a simple image gallery CMS (Content Management System) -- check here too! Flash gets me back a bit specially when using a tablet or some portable device. It doesn't do the job very well, but seriously, your website is good and complete. Loved the pictures too! :)
