Picture #3 explains why there's no one sitting on the bench in #2.

Ha! thanks, I was wondering if anyone else picked up on that. It was rather close to the waters edge and I was a bit nervous walking in front of it for a quick pic, let alone sit there like dinner on a platter. (I'm guessing the bank has receded over the years to make it that close to the bench.)

Can you imagine sitting there for lunch eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and listening to your boom box snapping away pictures? A few years ago, I drove Alligator Alley Route 75 across Florida through the Everglades. At one place, I pulled the car off onto a parking lot to take a break and check out the scenery. Although it was off-season and no one else was there, it's a place where vacationers park and unload their boats into the water. So I get out of the car (edited) and walked over and lean over to the dock down into the water to see how far down I could see. Then suddenly I remembered that movie where this lake had a huge alligator. I forget the name of it. In any case sudden fear overcame me and I jumped up to get back to the car where I left my wife inside waiting. I didn't say anything being embarrassed by my sudden cowardice. Didn't have time to take a picture. So you're pretty brave. Or foolish? :)

Don't get me wrong, every fiber of my instincts tell me to stay the hell away from the edge and the only thing that allowed me get about three feet from the edge at some points was the knowledge that attacks on humans by alligators are a rarity. Most of the people that have been attacked for one reason or another were actually in the water where a large alligator is top predator and sees a person swimming as an easy target. You were probably pretty safe to do what you did but I'm like you, I think the longer you stay there the more the chances increase of something ugly happening. You were right to trust your instincts, imo.
