Myself. C&C on lighting pls

OK, so it's hard to take a self portrait - but here's one I took trying to get my lighting right.
Aiming to show the fact that I'm English, and now living in America, in a very subtle way.

C&C anything in this photo! Lighting mostly though. Thanks



For info, I used a Nikon SB700 speedlight aimed to the left and bouncing off of a white door.
Camera about 2ft from subject, background about 2ft behind subject.

Daylight coming in from window to the right.

Yeah selfies are tough, but you did a great job nailing the focus (which is always the hardest part of a self-portrait for me) and the depth-of-field is nice.

For the lighting... it looks a little washed-out to me, but I tend to like my photos very constrasty so my opinion may not be the best one to listen to. Personally I would have dropped the light source on camera right by about a stop (either by dialing it down or moving it back).

yeah you're looking a little washed out. The lighting isn't doing anything interesting for you, and the image overall is looking very desaturated; not sure if it's because of the lighting or not here.

I think you're leaning a bit too far forward in your pose as well. I know what you're doing, but you lost you neck doing it. Try to do the same without leaning in so much, so you still have a neck, but you stretch away that double chin

Keep at it though. It's a really good practicing in flash/lighting. The other week I probably took a good 400-500 pics of myself and kept 5-6

Show your neck, and create a masculine approach, the lighting is a little too flat for my liking, Do love the Union jack though.

Ah good point - I didn't even notice the lack of neck due to the "push head forward, dip it slightly" type of pose. too far forward huh.

Hmm yes, and too washed out - I could do with setting less flash power.

The focus was definitely the hardest!!

Definitely need some more contrasty lighting. For me, it's a bit flat. I find it tough to get contrasty lighting that looks nice without having too harsh of shadows--but hey, thats what practice is for, right?
