So I want to get my long exposure sunset on, and I'm wondering what kind of ND filter would be best?

Do they need to be of a high quality, or will any item at a low price still do the trick? Thanks.

I think you will find the cheaper filters have no coatings on them, and are therefor more susceptible to lense flare, especially shooting into the sun.

You are adding glass to the front element. SO... putting a cheap filter on there is going to be no different than shooting through a cheap lens. A bad filter can make a $1000 lens produce worse images than a $100 lens. Buy a quality filter and I think you are going to need graudated ND filters for sunsets moreso than a straight ND filter.
