Need a new camera! Help me decide.

I'm moving to Germany for the next two years and I would like a DSLR to document my travels.

My priority is something that takes high quality pictures. I'm not going to be shooting any action or sports, mainly just scenes and environments.

Video is not the purpose of me getting a DSLR but I would like one that does it well in case the opportunity arises.

I am a beginner at photography but I'm pretty tech savvy. I'm looking for something for beginners but also something that I could learn from. Something with longevity.

One of the entry-level Nikon, Sony or Canon models should allow you to learn and will have comparable features without breaking a budget. I would recommend going to a store and physically handling some of them, comparing the controls and menus. If you want to spend more than a basic kit, possible supplement (or upgrade) the kit lens.

Which brand would you recommend? I have a Canon camcorder that hasn't let me down. However, the Nikon DSLRs are probably just as good as the Canon DSLRs, I would imagine.

When I bought my DSLR (a few years ago), it was almost a coin toss. I ultimately went with Nikon, and haven't looked back. Canonites will, no doubt, prefer their choices. Sony makes Nikon's sensors. Handling the cameras should help you decide.

I'll spend up to 1000 dollars if it's really worth it. I would like to stay around 500 dollars.

This is a good set up and you still have a $100 to spare for extra stuff like memory cards, filters, extra battery (must have), bag, etc.....

a55 is a good camera. Same sensor as my a580 and the d7000 and d5100 with a smaller price tag. Does good video as well. The lenses I recommended are on the cheaper side but very solid and good for a beginner. You can always upgrade lenses later.
