NEF file.....?

Ok, I wanted to see the difference in shoot raw vs jpeg, now I can't open any of them to view. What am I doing wrong?

What are you opening the NEF files with? You can download Nikon View NX2 from their web site.

All RAW converters are not created equal, and from what I've read Nikon's RAW format is one of the more difficult to read.

I didn't think to try that one. I guess I wont be able to email these to a friend, huh?

There are a lot of programs that will read NEF files. All (or maybe "Most") of the mainstream editing software should read them, but some are much better than others. I know Photoshop, Lightroom, Bibble, DxO, Paintshop Pro, and others will open them but after that is what counts.

You can send your friend a link to View NX2. I don't think it has to be registered.

The software that came with your camera should be able to open, edit and save the image as a TIF or JPG.
You can email any of the files to your friend but he may only be able to view the JPG files.

I'll try that Craig, thanks. I guess I should try raw and jpeg, or just nix the raw all together if I intend on sharing them?

You won't see any difference between the two.......... until you start PPing.

Exactly right. And unless you are going to do some post processing there is no need to save them as RAW. During editing is where RAW formats make a real difference.

Self-centered, how so? I was looking for an answer right away. I figured why not post on both to get the quickest answer available, which happened to be right here. No harm, no foul is the way I see it.

When I actually seen it, I sort of thought it was like a tattle tale. Oooh, look what he did kinda thing.

Most people view TPF by the active/current topics so you actually won't get a quicker answer by posting in 2 different forums. They will both be seen by the same people at the same time. I don't really care that you did it but it actually doesn't get you a quicker answer....bumping your original thread. (if nobody has answered and its been a while) will get it back into active topics.
