New camera - newbie in choosing

Consider this: If the camera shop has priced a complete bundle of components, and you go in and suggest that they delete the two kit lenses and add in one other lens, (which they may or may not stock) and come up with their best price; they are going to subtract only a small portion of the price for holding out the two kit lenses, but will add in the full price of the better lens at retail. Now you will end up with a better lens, but probably end up paying the same as before. This is not a bad strategy, as you will have a better lens, but do not assume you are going to save money at the same time.

I did think of that, of course, but for some reason they don't sell the body only and whichever lens I want. I mean I have to just stick to one of the kits they offer, there's not middle way unfortunately.

My take on this whole thread is that there seems to be an urgency to purchase the camera at this "store." And I kinda get the feeling that you're being taken advantage of by buying something that you don't necessarily want. If you want a particular kit, or setup, then take the time to research online retailers like B&H, Adorama, KEH, eBay, Amazon, Cameta, Calumet, etc. etc. etc.

I pulled up a D5200, 50mm 1.8, and an 18-55 all for right at $721 from KEH.

I think I mentioned I can't really purchase anything online at this point. And as for the store, it's the only one in my city that's sort of the biggest centre that offers cameras and all the gear to it. Also the only place that has larger variety here.

If it has to do with paying with cash (or lack of credit card, etc), you can always get a prepaid credit card or visa/mc gift card. The retailer still gets their money and you pay a minimal fee (like $5).

I wanted to thank all of you for the help, I really wouldn't have been able to choose anything otherwise. I got the D5200 and so far I've mainly tried it at home actually, I've been using the manual mode only, guess there's no other way to learn. I'll make sure to go out and try it outside too, of course. I'm really pleased with it so thank you so very much!! :hug::

Happy to help Deneuve, I think you'll be very happy with the D5200. I don't actually use manual mode that often myself, more of a fan of Aperture Priority myself. But if there is anything we can help with let us know.
