How outdated is the Canon 30d?

Depends on what you want to do with the 30D. I think it is about 10 years old like my D200. Should be able to give you perfectly good shots and is a good camera to learn with. The ISO is limited compared to current cameras, but can work in the range of most films you might try.

If your grandfather just gave you the camera then might spend some time learning it and then ask him how to get the most out of it, if that is possible. Might check out his shots or on-line to see what other people have done with this camera.

Check the shutter actuations, I was given my camera with 10k and now it is at 70k, these cameras should do at least 100k actuations. Check the battery, might pick up one or two extra and go with a larger memory card if the current one is only 4gb.

For film I would probably first try it out with an Canon EOS body like Derrel mentioned. That is probably the cheapest entry, unless your grandfather kept some film cameras in addition to the darkroom.

He has a canon a1 lying around somewhere he says.a Hes giving it to me because its to heavy for him, his camera now are mirrorless. I am pretty fimiliar with this camera as I have taken a few hundred photos with it. Im just not fimiliar with what is out now a days. I learned on a ae1.

Nice, that A1 was from around when I had some Pentax ME Supers. I would use the A1 for now.

Hope your grandfather is not using a mirrorless with a 70-200 f/2.8 zoom as I saw in use last week in Florida, that would offset his plan to go lighter.
