So I was wondering, and this has probably been discussed in here before. Is it better to go with the latest and greatest monitor but having to pay for it or a monitor that is a year or two old. I know the word "better" is going to elicit the traditional response of "Whatever your priorities are" but more I'm looking for is personal opinion, Would you opt for an older model if it is cheaper over something fresh off the product line?

What type of computer displays? TN, IPS, PVA?

For what kind of use? General, critical or non-critical image editing, gaming?

The cost of IPS type displays has come down a lot in the last 2 years. The cost relative to size has also come down.

TN type displays are still the least expensive and still the least usable for image editing.

IPS for critical use, lol sorry forgot to clarify that in the original post.

It depends. Sorry but it always comes down to that. I opted for spending $1000 on a NEC IPS display. Now if the current newer model and the previous model were on sale at the same time (as they were earlier this year) I probably would have gone with the older model if it came with a discount of a few hundred $ but not if the difference was minimal.

Now looking at your post unfortunately the human behavioural analyst in me seems to think that you already know what you want but are seeking for approval to do it. I recommend you go with your gut. If you can comfortably afford the extra then do. If you know you're going to buy it and will be swearing at yourself until your next paycheck comes hoping the credit card bill doesn't come first, then go for the cheaper option. Monitors haven't changed much in the past 2 years and a 2 year old IPS panel will still be a world better than modern PVA or TN panel.

If we're talking used, then again it depends. Was it used once a day briefly in a clean room in hospital? Or was it on 24/7 in a dusty environment?

I picked up two 24 inch "last years model" HP S-PVA panels for doing photos and vids with my Mac. I paid $600 for both shipped BNIB and couldn't be happier for the price. Deals can be had, you just have to find them and do the necessary research to make a informed purchase/investment. I got mine off of feeBay.
