nothing to do with flicker, you said smaller than a harvest mouse and that it was born with no hair/fur. So it had to be a moth in my mind

Hah great guess! - though it could have been a butterfly (unless all their grubs have furryspines on them)

He just appeared in the garden (apparently the cat was playing with him) and now he is in a tank with some leaves and plants to eat (the right kind too). So here is hoping for some good pics of the crysalis and maybe even the hatching too

Yah -- though I was at a butterfly house yesterday where they were breeding some - sadly it a good 2 hours from where I am and I have little chance of getting back to see them when they hatch
