New portrait lens test shots

There's a Thai word "herr" that means to be excited by something new, another word is "baa" meaning crazy or obsessed, and one word for a foreigner is 'falang'.

I'd just bought a used Fuji XF56mm f1.2 lens and my long suffering 'model' was trying to eat street food in the tropical heat whilst muttering "falang baa herr".

Some may think my depth of field was too narrow, but after buying an f1.2 lens I'll be exclusively shooting wide open for the foreseeable future.

I'm surprised if that's all she said... maybe you should find a test subject that won't be aggravated, like the water bottle.

Photography wise it is quite shallow, in the second one the hand isn't in focus, but what is in focus is nice and sharp.

You will love that lens! It needs contrast to nail focus and takes patience. For fast movement in darkness I had a hard time nailing the focus. Where you live with the lovely light the lens is perfect.

Yeah, I don't have anything that fast (1.8 is my fastest) but even when I got those it took me a while to back it down a bit...let'er rip.

I think the advantage of the 1.2 lens is that when you do back it down a little it will be so sharp and clean. 1.8 on a good 1.2 lens should be better than 1.8 on a 1.8 lens.

I hope your camera goes to 1/8000th.

I'm an unrepentant bokeh fan too. I think it's like flared jeans, comes in and out of fashion in a cycle, but always looks kind of cool.

Frank, I think you should have backed away slowly...


I recently got one of those old Russian Helios 44-2 lenses. It's f/2.0 and 58mm. I use a Fotodiox adapter for my X-T1.
I think you'll have a lot of fun with this Fuji f/1.2.
You'll get all those blurred circular specular highlights that'll make you think you've wandered into Lawrence Welk's Champagne Dance Party. They're fun to try and get into your composition in an effective way rather than a distracting way.

The more I use the lens, the more I realise what you mean. Focus takes some extra work compared to more general purpose lenses.

The lens does take extra work, but when it nails focus it is very sharp. Using that lens has made me slow down and think about the shot.

The bokeh is very nice. I didn't know the Thais used chopsticks.
