i need at least two heads to become minimally acquainted with the basics.

is someone willing to work with a conscientious, wiiling student?

i cannot afford to pay in terms of money, but i can perform services.

i tried this question about a year ago -- it attracted only two crackpots ... therefore: DON'T RESPOND IF YOU'RE A CRACKPOT

There are many "Meetup" photography groups throughout NY and NYC. A "Meetup" group leader will suggest a topic and participants from all over the city will come out and study that aspect of photography together. I got my first model session that way...and built up my portfolio in groups like this.

The thing you mentioned is meeting people that are enthusiastic. These "Photography Meetup" people are all friendly and enjoy the same things as you do. Some of them would love to find a friend themselves. If you buddy around at a group shoot...you can easily try out seeing if some other members would like to meet for a drink or coffee next week to talk shop some more. Ive met several life long photography friends and business associates this way. These will usually be professional people who enjoy people and enjoy helping each other out. Yes you could conceivably find a mentor there...or make friends with someone slightly ahead of you...and they would enjoy talking their head off with you about photography!! They have meetup groups in almost any city now...and they cover almost any topic of interest.

For me...this way of meeting smart, enthusiastic and talented people has been highly productive. Their URL is: Find Meetup groups near you - Meetup www.meetup.com Check them out!! Type in your location and whether you like photography, training dogs, car racing, or making model airplanes...and they will link you up with 20 people you could go out with next week!

And yes...you can make significant and worthwhile relationships with people who LOVE Photography...as long as you are not TOO much of a crackpot yourself!! LOL
