Some great shots, but I'm kind of at a loss to understand how you could have had such a narrow depth of field at f/22 with a 200mm lens.

Hi Craig I dont think is narrow I think it looks that way because of the slow shutterspeed, If I had used the same aperture and a high shutter everything would have been in focus.

Very first shot, for example. The nose of the car is in focus however the number 14 a few feet behind is out of focus. Guessing at the subject distance of 15 meters you should have had at least 5 meters of acceptable depth of field. Last shot is the same.

It all has to do with the speed of the car and shutter, plus any camera movement. Say the car is going 60mph that is 88 feet per second. With a 1/50 shutter speed the car will have traveled roughly 8 feet by the time the shutter does it's thing.

I think you are both smart! All I know is that I wanted to get the feeling of high speed coming out of the corner rather than on the straight. I had to use a f22 as it was quite bright in order to get down to 1/50.

No problem, like I said the shots are great. I just felt that shooting at f/22 should have given a lot more depth of field than I'm seeing in the images, and I was confused about that.

Yep! It's an effect caused by the slow shutter speed and the speed of the car.

Classic McLaren Can Am car. M8D I think. Bruce McLaren was killed testing one. And what look like some F5000 single seaters.

Without getting picky about stuff I like them. Perhaps a little selective sharpening was done that caused the effect. Looks like it would be a fun day out to try some serious panning shots. Now it's time for you go buy some ND filters for next time.
