Newbie - help reducing external flash brightness

I have Canon t4i and the speedlite 420ex.

Even when I bounce the flash off the ceiling, sometimes it's still too bright for my daughter. How do I reduce the brightness on the flash?

Change into manual mode by pressing the "mode" button until an "M" reads on the screen, then hold the SEL/SET button until the display blinks, then you can press -/+.
