Not nearly as much. I know one of the big pluses of the SX20 IS when it came out was a low shutter lag. Most of the GOOD point and shoot bridge cameras have been better on the shutter lag for quite a while now. Even the Kodak of a few years back had improved to a tolerable level.

Good to know, thanks. The last time I really looked at bridges was when I got my H9 back in '07. Shutter lag on it is probably in the 2 second range but when I' had to wait on it it seemed much longer.

From what I can see the shutter lag on the S4500 isn't so bad. It does have manual controls, so that will get you much further as well.

so would it be a good camera to start out with then. ?
ill only really be taking photos of scenery, trips out, family and the baby when he arrives next month.

It's a decent starter and will get you a long way in the learning and creating of exposure, controlling your own images, etc. You can create some amazing images with it.

I didn't look at the 9500. I did look at the 4500. Give me a few minutes.

The S9500 has a larger sensor and shoots in raw format, but it lacks the zoom and the high ISO capability of the S4500. For versatility the S4500 is probably the better one. You'd have good image quality, MUCH more leeway with the ISO AND mega zoom.
The S4500 is also MUCH newer technology. The S9500 was 2005. The S4500 is 2012

Im taking my GE x400 back tomorrow for a refund and ill be ordering the S4500 as soon as i can.

The price for the S4500 im looking at is £130.. is that reasonable. ?

Do you have a cell phone that can take pictures?

Especially if you have some smartphone that can download "apps" -- if there are camera apps for your phone, I HEARTILY recommend that you try a couple out.

Phones can do startlingly good work, sometimes.

I dont have a smartphone at the minute. and the camera on my phone is only a 3.2 megapixel so its not great.

im going to buy the s4500 tomorrow. its in stores new for £160
or the one online is £130 for a fujifilm refurbed camera with 12 month warranty...

should i just spend the extra 30 pounds for new or would a refurbed one be ok..?
