Newbie to digital

I'm new to digital, (and returning to photography in general after 40 years inactive).
I like monochrome and right now I'm trying to learn the best ways of converting a digital image to B&W.
Here's today's attempt:

Well, it's a good exposure, good B&W conversion, but otherwise it's just the top of a utility pole with a bunch of 3-phase lines going every direction and a drop to something below. Sorry, it doesn't do anything for me.

Fair enough. I just like geometric subjects for their shapes regardless of what they "mean".

Exactly. Would I want this monstrosity ( the actually pole) sitting outside my house? No, but as an exercise in shapes, lines and tones, I like it. On top of that, I'm a Maintenance Supervisor by trade, and I could see a copy of this hanging on my office wall. As the saying goes: To each his own.
