The biggest problem IMO is that you caught a bit of the fireplace there on the right side. You might have used just a bit more light on the left side of his face. A reflector maybe.

I'm not completely sure why, but when I look at this focusing anywhere other than his eyes I see a young boy. When I focus on the eyes, though, I see an old man's eyes - eyes full of the burden of life. I think it's the wrinkles underneath them, combined with the over-all seriousness of the pose.

A couple things:
1) Obviously not the greatest expression on the boy's face.
2) Need to change the angle so as to not get the fireplace in the background
3) the crop is too narrow next to the arms. Need more room on both sides, especially with cutting off the boy's left (camera right) elbow.
4) Need a little more light on the right side of the photo
