Was browsing the NYPL and noticed a nice HDR shot they used. Actually there is a better one of another liobrary local, but I can't find a link to it.

Personally I find HDR is so overbaked by so many that I look forward to the hip crowd kicking it to the curb like they did "selective coloring"

Why do you think that is an HDR image?
The outside light is overexposed, and there are very dark shadows inside - there in the foreground.

The white balance is off too, which is why the inside lights are orange.

The first several HDR shots I saw, I was like "wow, that is a cool looking picture". But it didn't take long after learning how to do it myself that my natural reaction to HDR pictures went from "wow" to "yawn". Now, it seems almost like it's becoming the photographic equivalent of this: Auto-Tune - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don't get me wrong, I think it still has its uses, but personally I'm a bit burned out on it.

Sometimes the HDR effect will help an image but most of the time it looks bad and over processed

the first HDR image I saw was so overcooked it was disgusting and it made me write off the whole technique. I've finally come around to realizing that it can be pretty cool when it's done right, but I only like it when you can't even really tell an image is HDR.
