Had fun shooting in 15 degree weather in front of a church right nearby. I'm really loving night photography as the peace around you is awesome. I really would love to improve on shots such as these. I am having a hard time figuring out if the stairs are off or is my angle is aligned wrong on the frontal pic. My tripod sucks but it's all I got so I don't complain too much. Thanks in advance for critique.

I prefer the 1st one, I like the overall mood that is created by isolating the church from its surroundings. I'm guessing you were shooting wide angle, and it's really hard to make things completely centered because of the distortion created by the lens. It will show a lot if your off even a bit... I think think you did a great job considering.

The 2nd one is interesting as well, but it just doesn't grab me like the 1st does. Nice job with these =)

Thanks Bekah. I unfortunately do not have the wide angle lens yet. I am really anxious to find work in Montana so that I can get new glass. In the meantime, I'll be playing with different angles and times of day with this shot. I'll also be using my wife or a friend as a prop in the bench. Suggestions are awesome if you have any.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you were not using a tripod for this shoot. I really dig the 1st shot. As mentioned above, the framing of the church alone really creates a mood that I find mysterious - perhaps even eerie. I assume that there was no tripod utilized, however, because there is a slight amount of blur in the 1st shot. I think that if the blur could be reduced it would render a really fantastic photo. In any event, a great outting! Keep it up!!

This is simply my $0.02. I'm not a professional...

Cheers!

It was on a tripod, however, the wind was on and the tripod is cheap. No fun but all in all thanks and I will hopefully get another go at it.

For #1 I would of lowered the framing of the image to show more stairs leading to the door. I would also straighten it. Good stuff!

i agree needs straightening. would be cool to see if you could frame, isolate just the reflection. it might not be possible with the angles and lights

+1 on the straightening. Overall good shot.

I'm far from an expert but think that 2# could have some potential - i like the snow in the shot and think that if you use the same angle, but move closer and remove the bench, that this may produce a good shot.....

I do like number one
But number two, (By no means am i a professional at this) Kinda seems like a snap shot to me? Idk , haha dont take my opinions too seriously, cause i could be completely wrong, but, just my thought
Number one is nice though
:D

Ajilista, I mean no offense and took none seeing as you are not the first person to incorrectly label a photo a snapshot on the forum. A snapshot has no artistic "look" or "feel" to it and does not pay attention to leading lines, colors, and distractions in pictures. Usually a photo that is a snapshot is considered a quick shot that took into consideration only the subject of the shot and nothing else. #2 would not serve as a snap shot seeing as I purposely looked for the angle to shoot with the lines(rails, stairs, sidewalk, arch) in mind. I also have been trying to consider the effect the look of an empty bench on the outside of a lit church would look in the eyes of my audience. Thanks though for the input as I'm always appreciative of input to help construct a better shot.

I actually like the the second off shot one. Kinda cool looking. Good job! ;-)

I took into consideration everything that was said and worked on framing for a bit. After doing so, I am much happier with the end result and wanted to share with you guys.
