Nikon D40 Question

I just picked up a new Nikon D40, is there any way to view the composition through the lcd on the back of a camera before you shoot (like on a point and shoot digital)? I hope this question makes sense, I have looked through the owners manual and couldn't find anything. Thanks!

No, AFAIK the D40 does not allow for 'live view'. Some of the newest DSLR cameras to have this as an added feature but most don't.

The D40 doesn't - but why would you want it to?

(please don't jump in with "street photography", it's a rhetorical question. My point is that, imo, it kills the purpose of having such a lovely viewfinder.)

it's not really that I wanted to, I just wanted to know so if the need ever arose I would know how to operate it
