just picked up nikon 55-200 zoom and when i have full zoom it looks really grainy is that because the camera is only 6 mp? cannot figure out how to put a photo here sorry. any ideas? kevin

Grainy means noisy which means you haven't nailed the exposure and the image is probably dark (Underexposed). Metering is crucial to get an image without noise. And if the subject is too dark or in low light you may not be able to get an a acceptable picture.

You cannot use this lens in low light or indoors as it is a slower variable f-stop zoom. The VR is much better than the non-VR version.

My 55-200vr set on D40 thru D90 and D200.

This is a great bang for the $$$ lens. The VR version is anyways.
But you do have to learn about light,Iso,Exposure,Shutter Speed and Aperture to get the best shots capable of the lens and camera you are using.

There are Nikon and D40 groups on flickr you can join and ask about specific camera and lenses and many tutorials. Also my Nikon D40/D60 blog I started in 07' has a slew of tutorial and howto links to sites that can explain it better than I.
