Nikon D80 Wide angle lens - Tamron 10-24mm

I am looking into a Wide angle lens for my Nikon D80 and have a few constraints.
1. Money (looking to spend around $500)
2. Needs to be bought at local camera shop due to gift cards (mikescamera.com)

Does anyone have any experience with this lens?

I had this lens for Canon, used it on a Canon t2i. Even on the 1.6x crop of the t2i, that lens was very, very wide! It was really fun having such a wide field of view!

However, the quality wasn't the greatest. Maybe it was just me, but I could tell a difference when I used that compared to the kit Canon lens that came with the t2i as far as image quality was concerned. I liked the lens for shooting very wide, but that was about it.
