Nikon D90 or Canon SX260 for deployment?

I used to have a nikon d40 and loved it. I even put pics on here from it. When the D90 came out I loved it and wanted one ever since, now that I'm going overseas in a few months I want a nice camera and since I have the money I wanted the d90 but a couple people were saying not to because I'd get sand in it. I can get it for a decent price now as well, what do you all think? Get the canon for now and the nikon when I return or just get the nikon now?

I dont know much about the canon, but the d90 is a gem of a camera. You can pick them up used in good shape for around $500ish.

Wouldn't be wanting to take a dslr especially a less than pro body build to the desert for extended stay and use. Also the issue is lenses? anything less than pro build may not stand up to use in a more rugged and hostile environment. Yep would be concerned about using it longer than a week or two in hostile environments. The D90 is well built and pretty rugged. But don't think I would want to put it to the test for a year? or more?

Would be looking at the smaller lighter compact integrated bridge type cameras. One that has something along the 20x optical range myself. And the SX260 may or may not fit the bill.

I have a D90 and love it. If you want to be certain to avoid sand/air/water, then you'd need something sealed and that would be a much higher end camera which will be very expensive.

I can't speak to the Canon, but as to the D90, you could do much worse. I love mine.
