yes that's the non VR version.
the VR version is slower
the 24-85 / 2.8-4.0 is a nice lens. I have one and used it all the time on my d7000.

If you want your lenses to withstand rough usage, then these are the lenses for you. They are built to outlive all your other equipment and shine in performance.

I think my 85 1.8G is better @ 2.8 than ANY 70/80-200 @85 and f2.8. While I agree they are built like tanks, I don't think they will outshine all other lenses in perfomance.

You say that now, but what if you find yourself in a zombie apocalypse with no running water or electricity? You are gonna wish you has your holy trinity then.

Since I'm poor, I did a "previous generation" type of Holy Trinity....

Nikon AF 20-35mm f2.8
Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f2.8
Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8

I used to have the poorer version
20-35/2.8
35-70/2.8
80-200/2.8

I then swapped out the 20-35 for a 18-35/3.5-4.5
and I have my 24-85/2.8-4 to fill in the gaps better than the 35-70

I've had very good luck with my trinity (duo). I like my Nikkor 17-55 2.8 and 70-300 for most shots with my 85 1.8G thrown in there for unbeatable sharpness and bokeh when I need it/can use it. I just wish all lenses were as good as the 85 since I get disappointed with anything else when I need to take it off my camera. It's so good.

The trinity is awesome, unfortunately also rather large and heavy. I'm quite happy there was already the much more lightweight alternative 16-35mm f4 VR and 70-200mm f4 VR available when I switched to Nikon full frame.

I guess it depends of your shooting style and your needs, for me my 24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 are bare minimum, I cant see myself going with slower lenses.
Yes these are big heavy lenses but for me its well worth the sacrafice "schleping" them around.
Each person and their preferance, no right or wrong here

I you are looking to buy the "Holy Trinity" I would wait until Nikon does one of their "the more you buy the more you save" sales. I was able to save myself something like $1000 by purchasing the D800, The 24-70 and the 70-200 all in one shot. I know it's still a lot of money but, at the time the savings was I think around 15 percent of the total purchase.
Unlike many above I am not talented in my photography. I am a hobbyist with no talent to be perfectly honest. What I can tell you though is, I don't regret for a second making this large purchase. For me they live up to the hype.

I love the 18-35 G lens. I find it sharper then the 14-24 anytime. It's one of the most underrated lens.

Short answer is Yes.

I would LOVE to own the Nikon 14-24 2.8. It is regarded as the best wide angle zoom against other brands even. Some even say it is as good as many primes in that range.
I will get it when the funds permit. I have the Nikon 24-70 2.8 & the older version of the 70-200 vr2. It's the 80-200 2.8 2 ring version.
