Nikon or canon ( a real question)

Hows the D80? I was looking at getting the D80 body with a AF-S 18-135mm G IF ED DX Lens then get a 50mm f/1.8 (or 1.4) for my birthday.

I was all ready to buy a D80 to replace my D100 and then I picked it up in the store and couldnt do it. That was months and month ago. I still have the D100, lol. There's no replacement for a solid "feeling" camera, images be damned. (D100 has a metal body, D80 is plastic which to me feels like a toy, albeit a cool toy)

edit> One never thinks they'll need to utilize their camera as a morning star... until that day comes of course and they're whiff'ling a piece of plastic at a large bear (at the zoo whos pen they've stumbled into.)

The Canon Rebels seem a bit cheaper feeling,
the Canon 20D, 30D, and on up seem very solid though.
I have not held a Nikon in a while, but most seem solid.

There is a fine line between solid and heavy though.

Ok What about the XTi? Is it solid? And how does it compare to the D80 when it comes to bang for buck? The D80 is a nice bit more but is it worth it? (BTW im posting this on my PS3 because my computer broke last night.)

I'd go for Nikon for feel. I find them more ergonomic as well.

Anyone remember the Canon 300D? Felt like it was made out of recycled yoghurt pots...

I'd go D80. The 400D boasts this 'CCD cleaning' feature, which isn't as great as people make it out to be (how long does it take to remove a bit of dust in photoshop?)

And the ergonomics of the 400D are a bit 'strange'.

if you have about 500 images to work through and all of them with tens or even hundreds of clear dustbunnies since they were taken with a small aperture, then you would pray for clean sensors, since it would take many many hours.

I agree though, that automatic dust removal only works for easy dust anyway (with all maunfacturers).

People love to claim that Nikon cameras are always built better and more solid than Canons. That's the number 1 thing I see Nikon fans touting over Canon cameras. I shot with a friend's D50 and it felt like a toy to me. The Rebels feel like this too, compared to my 20D. Then again, my 20D feels like a toy compared to my M645. In the end, who really cares. Image quality is paramount if you ask me. All of the companies making DLSRs make a good product.

I agree, the little ones (D40-D80+all the Rebels) all feel like toys and rather plastic, but that does not mean they are bad at capturing images as you said.

Once you realize the Rebels are meant to be in a LOW price bracket for DSLRs they arent all that bad.
You just have to sacrafice some things for that kinda price.
While they are very nice camera, and should most most ppl very happy that are just getting into DSLR,
I felt, that if you are going to do it, to it right. So I ordered a 30D just the other day.
I just didnt feel right getting the BOTTOM DSLR out there.
But then again, I was lucky enough to have to $$$ to jump to the 30D.

does that include lenses? You can easily afford a 20d and a nice prime lens for that...which would be a great setup. the 20d is much better than the 350d IMO...

w/ Sigma Lens


Although I'm from the U.K and I'm not 100% on the value of dollars... so, I 'think' a setup like that would be in your budget.

Nikon D50 w/0 battery = 1.2 lbs

Canon 350D w/battery = 540g

if you are looking for sheer weight of a camera one that feels good in larger hands then you may even want to look at a Minolta 7D

Minolta 7D with Battery grip, 2 batteries and no lens 1.4787 kg or 3.260 lbs
body only is 1.68 lbs or 760 g
