Nikon software- image size when cropping?

Help! Novice here. I recently got a Nikon D5000 and am trying to learn how to use it. I am using the Nikon Capture NX2 software for editing. It seems like when I crop an image, it decreases the file size, so much that the file size is not of quality for printing. What am I doing wrong???
