Something like this. It will look more ethereal. less reality. more modern. with a white frame it would look good in a gallery. it is not my style but since you are going for it. i am a baroque guy.

I like them both, as they are! Love the ground shadows in #2. Those horizontal lines look great with the vertical lines of the posts. Nice shot!

Since you are ok with edit suggestions here is how I would do this one. He looks as though he is both curious and possibly frightened of what lies ahead. It is a good metaphor for an older man contemplating his future. My edit has him alone coming out of the light and looking into the shadows as if crossing into the unknown with some hesitation.
