I think a smile would've warmed this guy right up.
Not liking the door jam through the head trick, try to find backgrounds less distracting especially those with vertical lines behind the head.
Maybe straighten up the tie and button the jacket.
Just my thoughts. Keep working at it.

thanks , this was a rushed shot of my grandfather before we headed off to church, i always seem to make that mistake on the fly of having things poke through peoples head :/
