Older flash on T2i?

I have an older flash that I might want to keep to use as backup but I doesn't work on the 550D/ T2i. I noticed while playing with the flash that it has two contacts total on the hot shoe (side and bottom) and jumping them together with a cable sets of the flash. Any way to get this flash working or is it garbage and sorry for the neub question.

Do you know the trigger voltage of that flash? Some old flashes had a really high trigger voltage that could fry your camera's circuits.

EDIT: Holy F, just measured its 260v!

Bought a dedicated bower flash for my T2i and it wouldn't flash on the camera but it flashed when pushing the button on the flash!!! Thought I fried the camera with the old flash. Changed the batteries (rechargeables) and it works :hail:. I guess half of the batteries were good and half were bad the first time but I almost had a heart attack :er:

You old flash can still be used off camera with some radio triggers or optical triggers. Just make sure that they are rated for high trigger voltage; I think that most work fine.

If the flash is off camera then high voltage does not enter into the question.

The flash may be garbage, but carry on like that and your camera will be garbage.
