I went to Myanmar in 2005, quite a time before many tourists went there, and even fewer Americans. Yangon was incredibly hot and steamy and looked a total wreck. Sidewalks caving, no electricity, almost frightening in its decay.
I was walking around near the Indian Market, a few blocks directly west of the center of the city and came across this neighborhood almost completely inhabited by what looked like South Asians in pretty desperate straits. Later I learned that these people were probably refugees from further west in Asia, with no papers and no prospects.
Now that I have become a little more advanced in my sensibilities and I probably wouldn't have shot this picture but I did and it remains as a vivid reminder of some people's lives that I can't bring myself to discard.
