This was an impromptu shot in the backyard. Things I see are that the background is not ideal and I should have made her go in and put on shoes rather than white socks. It also seems very bright on the bottom left, I think the reflector could have been positioned better. Then again, my "assistant" is only 10 yrs old. :) I also should have used a wider aperture.

What else am I not catching? How's the white balance and brightness and all that?

The lighting is very flat. The white balance is a little bit cool. As you said, the background is distracting. Hopefully someone with more experience than i will chime in.

I tend to agree with D-B-J, the colours area bit flat and white balance seems a bit cool, although the image is quite sharp. As far as the background goes, it is distracting, but it can be altered by blurring it in Photoshop, although I am not sure that the process would give you the results you might like, or you can remove the background and replace it with something less distracting.

Cheers,

Quick edit. It's a little too warm now. Do you shoot in RAW? If so you can play around with the white balance a little more. Even if you shoot in JPEG and have Photoshop and Elements you can open JPEGS in camera raw and play around with exposure, temp, etc.
