So I'm casually wondering if there's such a thing as one-way glass that has more of a white effect than black. Ergo looking one way you see white and looking the other you see all the way through. My gut feeling is that such a thing does not exist, but I've been surprised before by strange magics of optics and science.

Since the only other way I can envision having a clear see-through surface one way that also has a white mask the other way is to have a sheet of glass and then slide a perspex sheet of white underneath, then use a polarizer to reduce reflections from the transitions at the glass/perspex boundary.

I have seen applications of this nature in the past but they have been extremely expensive, and are used for privacy rooms in the large corporate HQ offices.

the only thing that i've seen affordable to us, puny mortals, is the mirror film. There are some that have different colour casts - black/white/rainbow etc.

Thanks Foques, I'd not heard of mirror film. The only thing is it seems that its properties rely on ambient light variation. Depending on the angles it might mean that light for it has to come from behind/side rather than direct or the light difference might cause it to block. Be interesting to experiment with it.

you can get it, pretty much, at any store.
here is an example: Sears.com

the one above, from Contra, reduces visibility on both sides, and allows you to see outlines.
