optical slave help

hey, i have a d40x with an sb-600 and a vivitar 285hv, i want to make it so that when the vivitar goes off the SB will too. aka optical slave, can anybody tell me how to do this?

I'm not sure to be honest as i've never dealt with flash. You'd probably get a better response posting in the "Beyond the Basics" section or something along those lines.

most slaves have a setting to switch it from normal mode over to optical, be sure you changed that setting. im not sure about your model. i would read the manual.
