Outer Hebrides, Light and Colour

Two completely different times of the same day.

1) Church, South Uist.

Shot with the sun at it's zenith. Churches on the Outer Hebrides are numerous and austere, even in ruin there is no frivolous ornamentation. As there was an established high pressure and a 'dirty haze', I kept the camera on close subjects rather than sweeping distant landscapes. I was taken by how something that would look so grey within a city, with it's fumes, grime and ostentation, has so much colour and contrast within the bleak, hard landscape of the Outer Hebrides.

2) Wild Flowers, lichen and rock, shaded at sunset.

In shade with the sun low on the horizon this scene was lit only with the reflected light from the sky and the sea. Soft colour and amazing contrast.

Aye mate, those little white churces really stand out in the landscape. While they can be autstere the large statue "our lady of the isles" certainly stands out in the landscape and was quite a suprise when I first saw it.

The colours in the islands can be spectacular, and the lighting can be dramatic or nuanced but I seldom find it boring.

I think you've encapsulated the colours and ideas well here, it's definately things that I associate with the islands from scences I've witnessed myself. Nice shots and as always well done.
